Savings Calculator Cost Comparison
I have an existing chronic condition (diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, etc.) Adds the ongoing cost of managing a chronic condition on top of each acute event below. This is the reality for 60% of Americans over 55.
Compound effect active. Each condition below now includes the annual cost of managing Type 2 diabetes as a baseline chronic condition — the most common and expensive chronic disease for this age group. In the US, this adds $0/year (OOP + premiums are already counted). In Spain, it adds €300/year in pharmacy copays. Every year you stay in the US system, the gap compounds.

Top 5 costliest conditions for men aged 55–64. US costs show your real cost with ACA Silver — premiums plus out-of-pocket combined, because both come out of your wallet. Spain costs assume Convenio Especial (€60/month). 72% of medical bankruptcies happen to people who have insurance.

Why does Gold cost more than Bronze overall?

For a single catastrophic event, Bronze wins on total cost — lower premiums outweigh the higher deductible. But Gold makes sense if you use the system heavily (15+ visits/year, multiple prescriptions), because 20% coinsurance beats 40% on high-frequency spending. It also matters for cashflow: Bronze has a $7,000 deductible due upfront; Gold is $1,500. For many people, the issue is not total cost — it is whether they can write the check in January. Either way, both plans cost 10–30x more than Spain. The plan choice is noise compared to the country choice.
